The name “Kőfejtő” means Quarry , and was given to the wine because Toth Cellar is located next to Somló’s only quarry. Luckily, because Somló’s volcanic rocks crumble and break up very easily, the quarry was a very short lived venture in the last century. The rocks taken from here were useless for road – building. This saved Somló, as opposed to Sag, its smaller volcanic brother 30km West. Sag consists of a different type of volcanic rock, hard and solid, so it was literally “mined away” in the early 1900s and is now third its original height.
